Odisha has established a dedicated armed police unit to bolster protection efforts in Similipal Tiger Reserve (STR), marking a unique initiative in the country. This specialised force will operate alongside the existing forest department staff to enhance security within the reserve.

The government has sanctioned creation of 131 posts of different categories as part of the dedicated one company of Armed Police Reserve.

As per the government order, the disciplinary and administrative control of these police personnel will rest with Superintendent of Police, Mayurbhanj whereas operational control will be vested with company head who in consultation with Field Director of STR.
